Thomas Geisbert, US Army Medical Research, Institute of Infectious Diseases, Fort DetrickREFERENCE: Lancet 2006;367:1399 April 29th, 2006-05-26A vaccine developed against the Marburg virus has now been reported in the Lancet to have kept monkeys alive when used after they’ve been exposed to the infection. Thomas Geisbert and his colleagues at the US Army Medical Research Institute in Detrick, Maryland, have modified vesicular stomatitis virus for use as a Marburg vaccine. It has already worked in prophylaxis, and now the vaccine has also been found to be effective as a treatment for existing infection. Dr Geisbert talked with Peter Goodwin about his findings.
